Editorial Review:

Description:
Retired Captain Hugh 'Bulldog' Drummond is an adventurer created by Herman Cyril McNeile who is part James Bond and part Simon Templar, but preceding them both. In 'Bulldog Drummond Escapes' (1937, 65 min.), Drummond (Ray Milland) is hired to protect a young heiress from harm and ends up doing the unthinkable--falling in love with her. 'Bulldog Drummond's Secret Police' (1939, 56 min.) finds Drummond (John Howard) on the trail of a mad scientist that takes him to a strange old castle and through an extended dream sequence. Leo G. Carroll has an early featured part, playing three separate villainous roles.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Great Fun!
Bulldog Drummond films date all the way back to the silent era. While the two films with Ronald Colman are considered to be the best by many critics, the most fun and entertaining films are surely the "B" films with John Howard in the role of Hugh Drummond. But others had their turn at the famous adventurer, including a young Ray Milland. This one has two great entries, lighthearted in spirit, and quite fun in that vein.

Bulldog Drummond Escapes

Captain Drummond to the rescue

Under heavy fog Drummond (Ray Milland) comes in for a landing against everyone's better judgment. It is important as his friend is Algy Longworth is in the hospital (I rather not say what for).

While confronting Algy (Reginald Denny) on this delicate matter he gets a call form Inspector Col. Sir Reginald Nielson (Sir Guy Standing) who warns him to go home or leave the country immediately. "But Inspector!", "Don't ... Read More

Both movies were great fun to watch. If you enjoy the old detective movies of the 30s and 40s, Bulldog Drummond is a lesser known fictional detective from that era. The films are short, but they tell complete stories and have good plot twists, too. The documentation about the movies, discussing Ray Milland as Drummond versus his currently unknown successor, was very interesting. The reviewer was right on target, and I would suggest reading the notes that come with this CD.

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Lighthearted British crimefighter saves the day on this DVD!
This is a great deal of a DVD. Two features are presented for your viewing pleasure, starring the very entertaining precursor to The Saint, Hugh "Bulldog" Drummond.

Created by novelist Herman C. 'Sapper' McNeile, "Bulldog" Drummond was a Captain in World War I. After the war, Drummond missed the life of action his military career offered. He joined the police force, and then resigned to become an independent player in the game of crime and punishment.

While each film is only about an hour ... Read More
