Product Description:
An American fisherman becomes involved with a beautiful young drifter and a French freedom fighter who is trying to elude local Nazi collaborators on

Amazon.com:
Yes, it's true: you can virtually see Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall falling for each other in this Howard Hawks variation on Casablanca but adapted from--as legend has it--Ernest Hemingway's self-declared "worst novel." (The story goes that Hawks told Hemingway he could make a movie of the author's least work, and Hemingway gave him the rights to this story.) The script by William Faulkner and Jules Furthman actually makes this one of Hawks's and Bogart's most interesting and often exciting films. Bogart plays a boat captain who reluctantly agrees to help the French Resistance while wooing chanteuse Bacall. Hoagy Carmichael, wry at the piano, adds a delicious accent to an already wonderful mood. --Tom Keogh

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - The perfect film
The perfect cast - from Humphrey Bogart and Lauren Bacall to Hoagy Carmichael - whose genius provides one of the most entertaining threads to any film ever, displaying his own signature blues genius. And Walter Brennan. An even better written (by Ernest Hemingway), more realistic and more thrilling story than its prequel; Casablanca. The location, sets, and artisitc filming are unsurpassed, making it one of the very best films of all time.

Bogart and Bacall. On screen and off - hotly ... Read More

Rating: 3 out of 5 stars - To Like and Like Not
The film has its strong sides.
Watching Bogart and Bacall doing their thing is worth it. Some scenes are very strong: the most famous one, the whistling scene (she tells him: if you need something, whistle; she leaves the room; he practices whistling); my favorite: the farewell scene in the bar, when Cricket, the pianist, asks the happily departing Bacall: are you still happy? She walks away hip-swinging and smiling.

Ok, so far so good. But what a stupid story: a lame Casablanca copy ... Read More

"Anybody got a match?" Morgan looks out for Johnson, he is a client. Slim hands it over, and Morgan learns more about ... Read More

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - "She's heftier than you think"
Having watched this classic film countless times since I was a nipper I still think it's right up there with the very best pictures from 1944 but funnily enough one time I saw the same Hemingway story re-made in 1950 by Michael Curtiz with John Garfield in the Harry Morgan role and a surprisingly good Patricia Neal I think it was as the swell looking babe of the piece. Michael Curtiz was of course you will remember that hilarious and apparently tireless Hungarian dudenheimer who helmed a boatload of truly ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Is it re-mastered?
Most of the reviews provide commentary on the movie as art. Sometimes a reviewer will address the DVD quality (visual and audio) but it's rare. Bottom line: Amazon does not provide information on the visual and audio quality of the product. For older movies this is essential. Usually it's a matter of re-mastering of the original film using digital editing techniques. I have received, from time to time, a DVD from Amazon that is totally unwatchable. The sound and video were probably made from a projection of ... Read More
