Editorial Review:

Product Description:
Across the Universe, from director Julie Taymor, is a revolutionary rock musical that re-imagines America in the turbulent late-1960s, a time when battle lines were being drawn at home and abroad. When young dockworker Jude (Jim Sturgess) leaves Liverpool to find his estranged father in America, he is swept up by the waves of change that are re-shaping the nation. Jude falls in love with Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), a rich but sheltered American girl who joins the growing anti-war movement in New York's Greenwich Village. As the body count in Vietnam rises, political tensions at home spiral out of control and the star-crossed lovers find themselves in a psychedelic world gone mad. With a cameo by Bono, Across the Universe is 'the kind of movie you watch again, like listening to a favorite album.' (Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times)

Amazon.com:
Set in America during the Vietnam War, Across the Universe is a powerful love story set against a backdrop of political and social unrest: it's a story of soul-searching, self-doubt, and individual powerlessness cleverly conveyed through a multitude of Beatles songs. Like young adults all across America during the 1960's, Jude (Jim Sturgess), Lucy (Evan Rachel Wood), Max (Joe Anderson), Sadie (Dana Fuchs), Prudence (T.V. Carpio), and JoJo (Martin Luther) are in turmoil over the war; questioning their individual roles in the war effort and struggling to find a way to hold true to their beliefs while making a difference in the world. While love proves a powerful uniting force, its limitations become clear as relationships are strained and broken over individual perceptions of responsibility to cause and country. A fairly bizarre juxtaposition of extremely stylized, almost hallucinogenic scenes of swirling colors and reflections, highly choreographed dance segments, seemingly commonplace character interaction, and emotionally packed close-up footage of characters lost in contemplative song, this film imparts a good sense of the confusion and passion of the time and is at once powerful, invigorating, and disturbing. The film runs a bit long at 2-hours 11-minutes and several segments drag noticeably thanks to some incredibly slow song tempos. Warning: this production may change how you think about a favorite Beatles song forever. --Tami Horiuchi

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars - Like stepping into a time machine
I was prepared to be disappointed by this movie but instead I was blown away by it. How often have you heard other groups sing Beatles music and it just isn't the same, the delivery is just wrong? This is different. The actors were all superb, their voices amazing. This movies really captured the feeling of the sixties and the Beatles era. I watched the Blu-ray version and the picture as well as the sound were fantastic.

The sets and the imagination that went into this film added ... Read More

Good buy until you realize the dvd won't play in your player. Doesn't matter if you have a region 1 dvd player...

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Bravo!
I knew nothing of this film, and some old friends sent it as a gift, certain I'd love it.

They were right.

What makes this a great movie, one to keep and watch over and over, is, of course, the music. The ability to create original treatments of the songs while staying so true to the intended spirit is an enormous accomplishment; to make the songs wonderful again in a new way and in their own right is a miracle.

I'm always hesitant of Beatles remakes, suspicious ... Read More

Rating: 4 out of 5 stars - Different type of Beatles! Good music, fabulous in Blu-Ray!
"Across the Universe" presents Beatles' songs in quite a different way. The rendentions grow on you the more you listen. The actors are of fresh and new talent and sang live througout most of the movie. The storyline was made to go along with the songs and was very familiar. The colors are absolutely astounding in blu-ray. There are a lot of special, but weird and vivid, effects which seem to take you on psychedelic journeys. I feel these may have been a bit overdone. The extra features include a lot ... Read More

Rating: 2 out of 5 stars - Attention deaf/hard of hearing viewers: Misleading SDH labeling!
I'm giving this movie a 2-star rating due to the fact that the description is misleading. The movie is listed as having SDH. SDH is an acronym for "Subtitles for the deaf and hard-of-hearing". In addition to captioning spoken dialogue, SDH provides non-dialogue audio commentary and speaker identification for off-screen voices. All of this is very important for a person with a hearing disability to understand and enjoy a movie. This movie is labeled as having SDH in the language menu but does not caption ...
